The impact of new digital media on television

1) What does the 'industry' concept in A Level Media Studies refer to?

It refers to how a media organisation and the content created, distributed and developed by these organisations or how these organisations operate in terms of regulation.

2) What does David Hesmondhalgh argue with regards to how the creative industries have changed since the 1980s?

Media corporation are increasingly owning companies in different sectors of the industry. Niche audiences are increasingly targeted. The digital era has allowed online companies to compete with traditional tv companies. The amount spent on advertising has increased as well as cross promotion within texts. Globalisation has allowed texts to cirulate more easily.

3) Choose the three most significant points Hesmondhalgh makes regarding the changing cultural industries. Why are these the most significant in your view?

One of the most importance points is the increase in corporations owning companies in different sectors of the industry. This is significant because if conglomerates own the production and distribution to promote a media text, they can choose what texts can become successful and can dictate if other companies can fail. They can do this by choosing to make one genre popular than another like action instead of film-noir, which is already an outcome in Hollywood. The cultural industries is no longer saturated with different companies, but rather the big six who own the monopoly in the cultural industries.

Another aspect is that the amount of money put into advertising and cross promotion in texts has significantly increased. Advertising is increasingly expensive especially when a browser like Google can dictate a large amount of your audience and traffic on their services. This is the reason why companies like Disney have to promote texts within texts to ensure that they can attract a large of an audience as possible but also to reduce the amount that they have to spend in advertising as they don;t own their own platform in which they can advertise their products but rather use different services that are saturated with an enormous amount of content.

The last point directly links with the fact that digitisation has allowed the technology sector to compete with traditional media companies. The last point has allowed other companies that are not part of conglomerates to advertise and compete with them. Traditional companies like Blockbuster who used to advertise the traditional way, failed to conform to the change of audience accessibility with other competitors like Netflix, that is now the largest online entertainment subscription platform. So companies like Disney as mentioned above have had to spend more on advertising as companies who couldn't afford to advertise in peak times to receive the attention of a large audience on TV, could do it for cheaper on an online website.

4) What is technological convergence?

Where new technologies are created that take over from past technologies and do the dame thing but now evolving the way content is accessible.

5) How are technology companies challenging traditional broadcasters in the TV industry?

Amazon and Netflix began producing original TV series to compete with them. Netflix also was an online postal DVD service, which took away from the scheduled programming TV would have and switched it to on-demand viewing. But companies are retaliating such as Disney where it would pull out all its content from Netflix and create its own online distributing platform. Netflix however, already realised this and had long ago started its original content production.

6) What budgets will Netflix, Amazon and Apple spend on original programming next year?

Netflix: $8bn

Amazon: $4.5bn
Apple: $1bn

7) How many countries are Netflix and Amazon available in?

Netflix: 190

Amazon: 200

8) The global nature of modern television means producers are having to consider international audiences when creating content. What example from Netflix does the article use to explain this?

In the show Stranger thing they named a monster after a demon prince in the game Dungeons and Dragons which is predominantly part of mostly American cultural importance. Many countries understand American culture as their second culture. But this is an aspect they may not understand so they changed the name of the demon to something that the specific language or culture may understand when being distributed in different countries.

9) Do you think technology companies such as Google, Facebook and Amazon will increase their interest in the television industry?

I think they will. Hollywood actors are now moving towards TV more because of companies like Netflix and Amazon reinvigorating the industry to a global audience, especially when they have the same production qualities than a Hollywood film would have. The number of subscriptions are increasing just as viewing the number of subscriptions to TV packages are decreasing.

10) How do changes in technology influence the creation of TV dramas such as Capital or Deutschland 83? How?

I think that it is a good influence on these shows because it means that these shows can reach a wider audience online than just being viewed on TV as foreign language genres have become mainstream. These shows are created more and more as they now have a chance to be more accessible to their niche audience which can be picked up by international countries if successful.
