Research and planning- horror

1) State the genre you have chosen - horror or coming of age drama.

Horror

2) Choose at least five films in your selected genre and watch the trailer and one scene from each film. Make bullet-point notes on everything you watch, commenting on camerawork, editing, sound and mise-en-scene.

  • Normal family life in a house until someone gets ill - extended scene
  • Strange movements inside the house - horse moving
  •  Running away  from something inside the house
  • Experts coming in to save the day - something in the house - possession of another person
  • Editing - sound picks up when chased, silence in some parts of the trailer

  • Narrative is to explore a place - something personal
  • Editing: screen keeps cutting out like an old TV
  •  Talk of curses and stories of supernatural beings
  •  Getting lost and running  - being chased
  •  Going through mud and other hard to get through places - trapped
  • The House scene: The film uses sound and imagination to create what is attacking them, we see no image of the actual creature itself. The video camera add authenticity that this footage was found originally.

  • About a ghost haunting a family that can only appear in the dark
  • Editing: numerous jump cuts to increase pace.
  • Majority of the scenes shot in the dark
  • Low key lightening
  • Sounds picked up to show a horror show approaching.

  • montage of flashback
  • editing : screen recording, fast paced, sound matches action
  • setting limited; background of each character
  • quality not hd on purpose

  •  Extended scene at the start - normality
  •  New theme of race playing a factor
  •  Hypnotism or psychological elements
  •  Blood coming out from eyes and mouth
  •  Sound picks up when action happens

  • Get out - get out of here scene: there are many cuts to different characters, then all sound stops as soon as he takes a picture and the camera focus' on both main characters, white noise then starts and then they start fighting as blood comes out one of the characters nose.

3- statement of intent.

I plan to make a 90 second to 2 minute film scene from a low budget horror feature film. The narrative will include a young person (who experiences supernatural activity). This scene is from the middle of the movie so it will end in a cliff-hanger it is also inspired by the movie lights out. This scene will be taking place indoor, particularly in the  bedroom, corridor and bathroom. Many horror movies use non-diegetic sounds to build up tension, this is what I will be using most of the time, however I will also be using diegetic sounds at various points.

My target audience for this scene would be aimed at young/mature adults, in particular 16-21 year olds. The reason I have selected these ages is because it reflects the age of the person in my cast. Therefore, the audiences will find my scene more relatable as they will be able to identify with the characters- links to Uses and Gratifications-1974). Additionally, people of this age range are able to understand supernatural activity/paranormal, they can cope with psychological thrillers. Also, the audiences don't need to be overly smart to understand the plot, so it appeals to all types of demographics.

The representation normally in feature films that target big audiences usually feature a full white cast. This scene will use ethnically diverse groups, subverting the stereotypes and hegemonic races seen in typical Horror films. Presenting a more cast that is easily identifiable with a relationship with the audience and allows them to empathise with characters more easily, if they feel that the representations are more realistic to everyday life
