The target audience for the film is high school kids from ages 15+. This is because they will be able to identify and relate to the cast. This is because they may share similar beliefs and have similar mindsets through each of the different characters. In addition to this, they may have similar interests, leading them to part take in similar activities. This film is not targeted at a specific gender however it will lean towards the more feminine side of things through the fact the majority of the cast will be girls and the man characters will be female

1) Research: Film trailer analysis

This film trailer successfully communicates the narrative and genre to the audience through the consistent use of same setting as well as only focusing on main characters who are used consistently throughout
The way the trailer communicates narrative and genre is through the sound effects which are quite loud and abrupt, there are also whisperings included in some scenes. The genre is presented as horror as there are jump scares included as well as the lighting which is consistently dark and dull which creates mystery and fear for the audience.
The voiceover in the background of the trailer where we hear the characters exchanging dialogue, shows how they are looking for a missing person and mentions witches and a supernatural energy.
The editing of the trailer is extremely fast which leaves the audience confused and terrified at the same time which serves the purpose to convey the horror genre successfully. giving away too much information especially in a horror genre would mean that the audience will not experience the suspense.

Film trailer 2: mise-en-scene

This film trailer in particular uses mise-en-scene to create meanings which further develops narrative for the audience. Props are used throughout to create meaning - the book and pages of the book are used throughout the trailer which depicts that it holds importance in the movie ; in the beginning of the trailer we are shown a photograph of the woman in the trailer with who we assume is her deceased husband (this gives us explanation to why the movie is based on only a mother and her son). Through most of the trailer we see the use of mainly low key lighting which creates an eerie feel as it is a way of depicting the horror genre and also creates a sense of mystery for the audience as their knowledge is limited.

Film trailer 3: Camerawork

Most scenes in the camera are a slow pan, which makes the scene appear agonisingly long which also adds to the suspense and thrill for the audience. At one point the camera follows the characters and this is done speedily to add action to the scenes. The trailer also includes jump scares which keeps the viewers on edge throughout the trailer. Alongside with fas paced editing the trailer also consists of slow paced editing this is done purposely to catch the viewers off guard as well as keep them interested and guessing.

There are also a variety of close ups to magnify the the extent of fear faced by the characters it also creates suspense as the audiences view is limited and they aren't aware of the surroundings.

  Film trailer 4: Editing

At the beginning of the trailer as they viewers are being told of the story the editing is slow paced as well as during some of the horror scenes shown the editing is slow paced this is so that they can grab the audience's attention so they understand the trailer, it is also slow so that suspence can be created and grab the audience's attention for longer.

The second half of the trailer consists of fact pace editing this is to imply that this is the main plot of the scenes, using face past editing during a horror scene compliments the scene very well and adds to the thrill.

The transition between shots is quite abrupt to further enhance the fast paced editing as well as to show a lot in a little amount of time in the trailer. The trailer also has jump scares which keep the audience's on edge throughout the trailer and keep them entertained.

Film trailer 5: Sound

The trailer consists of a combination of diegetic and non-diegetic sounds.
The diegetic sound of the spoon tapping against the cup creates suspense because it suddenly fades in and out after moments of silence, this will intrigue and engage the audience.  This trailer particularly uses sound in an interesting way throughout, especially through the use of non-diegetic contrapuntal sound. Audiences can identify contrapuntal sound being used in the most disturbing and violent scenes of the trailer which creates an uncomfortable effect on the audience. The feelings an audience would feel on watching those scenes (from 1 minute on wards) does not match to the feelings they would typically feel when listening to the sound track used over. The trailer mainly consists of diegetic sound throughout such as speech from characters and sounds of objects, spoon tapping against a cup etc.

Film trailer 6: Trailer conventions, intertextuality, graphics, text-on-screen etc.

This trailer is a great example of one that consists of the key conventions used in trailers - graphics, on screen text, reviews, information. At the end of the trailer we are given the release date and a short list of credits. Throughout the trailer between different scenes there is text to engage the audience - some of the text used are reviews from critics rating the film in a positive manner which gives the film a good impression on the audience. The trailer also consists of 'from the producer of' which gives the audience an idea of what kind of film this will be and also gives the film recognition as it is linking it to other popular films - people who like the other films that are mentioned are more likely to go out of their way to watch this one. The text used is simple yet bold in the colour yellow - this is significant because the yellow text on a black background almost connotes to a warning sign or danger sign (including this fits the horror genre).

Statement of intent

I plan to make a 90 second to 2 minute film scene from a low budget horror feature film. The narrative will include a young person (who experiences supernatural activity). My main character is a vlogger who comes catches supernatural activities . This scene will be taking place indoor, particularly in the  bedroom, corridor and bathroom. Many horror movies use non-diegetic sounds to build up tension, this is what I will be using most of the time, however I will also be using diegetic sounds at various points.

My target audience for this scene would be aimed at young/mature adults, in particular 16-21 year olds. The reason I have selected these ages is because it reflects the age of the person in my cast. Therefore, the audiences will find my scene more relatable as they will be able to identify with the characters- links to Uses and Gratifications-1974). Additionally, people of this age range are able to understand supernatural activity/paranormal, they can cope with psychological thrillers. Also, the audiences don't need to be overly smart to understand the plot, so it appeals to all types of demographics.

The representation normally in feature films that target big audiences usually feature a full white cast. This scene will use ethnically diverse groups, subverting the stereotypes and hegemonic races seen in typical Horror films. Presenting a more cast that is easily identifiable with a relationship with the audience and allows them to empathise with characters more easily, if they feel that the representations are more realistic to everyday life
